Collies framställs ofta som den idealiska hunden, en virtuell hundförebild. På många sätt är de det. Men det betyder inte att alla borde ha en. Du kan hitta en uppsjö av källor som hyllar Collies lovord, men jag vill vara lite mer ärlig mot dig. Perfektion är inte möjlig, och Collies är inte utan sina brister (även om de är minimala) och egenheter (älskvärda för de flesta, möjligen irriterande för vissa).
Detta är inte en generisk artikel med uppstötande Collie-fakta. Mina föräldrar födde upp Rough Collies, så jag växte upp med dem som familjemedlemmar. Jag har nu 2 egna vackra Collies, men jag är bekant med andra raser, har arbetat på en veterinärklinik och fostrat många hundar. Jag arbetar för närvarande som volontär med ett utbildningsprogram för tjänstehundar och driver en Rover doggy daycare utanför mitt hus. Även om jag älskar alla hundar, skulle jag fortfarande välja en Collie framför alla andra. I grund och botten är jag din vanliga rasberoende.
Vad är så älskvärt med en Collie-hund? Offentligt glamoröst men ändå privat löjligt – det här är ofta en "Lassie Dogs" sätt. De flesta Collies bär sig själva med värdighet och dekor som anstår kungligheter, tills någon de älskar vill spela. Plötsligt, som om en kung tröttnade på att sitta på sin tron och bytte plats med sin hovnarr, förvandlas de till fullkomliga clowner. Collies är vänliga hundar och, för dem som känner dem väl, majestätiska derps.
Hur var mänskligheten begåvad med dessa härliga goofballs? Vissa historiker tror att deras gamla förfäder kom till Storbritannien med de romerska erövrarna och blandades med lokala hundar. Resultatet blev en hund som var stor och kraftfull nog att driva bort vargar och skydda boskap, men ändå kvick nog att manövrera flockar till andra betesmarker eller att marknadsföra med sin otroliga vallningsinstinkt. Än i dag är en Collie mild med sina anklagelser men ändå hård mot dem som skulle hota dem.
Föregående NästaTänk på att varje renrasig hund en gång var en blandras. Under lång tid kallades Collies helt enkelt "Scotch Shepherds" eller "Scottish Sheepdogs." Som den hund gynnas av skotska bönder, de avlades för funktion framför form. (Idag föder en grupp som heter Scottish Collie Preservation Society upp hundar för att efterlikna den gammaldags "farm collie".) Prototypen av Collie-hunden såg annorlunda ut – särskilt i den kilformade huvudstrukturen – än den hund vi känner idag. Detta berodde delvis på olika Collie "typer" som sedan har utvecklats till separata raser.
I Amerika, Smooth Collies (korthårig Collie-variant) och Rough Collies (Collie roughs) kan produceras i samma kull och är i stort sett desamma förutom pälslängden. Border Collies, med ursprung i gränsregionen Skottland och England, är berömda att föredra för sina exceptionella fårskötselkunskaper. Bearded Collies (kallas kärleksfullt "Bouncing Beardies"), nu den minst vanliga av deras mer avlägsna Collie-kusiner, ses sällan utanför utställningsringen. Diminutiva Shetland Sheepdogs eller "Shelties" utvecklades som herdar på Shetlandsöarna och är ofta felmärkta som "miniatyrcollies." Australian Shepherds, en spin-off vallningsras från Collie, används fortfarande som boskapshundar.
Tidiga collier var föga kända utanför Skottland tills drottning Victoria på 1860-talet, på ett besök på landsbygden, blev kär i de lokala herdarnas hundar. Hon tog med sig några Collies tillbaka till Balmoral Castle på det skotska höglandet och sedan till London, avlade dem och väckte rikstäckande uppmärksamhet. På Crystal Palace-hundutställningen i Birmingham, England 1870, delades Collies upp i tre klasser:"Rough-Coated Collies", "Smooth-Coated Collies" och "Short" -Tailed Collies." I USA dök Collies först upp i Westminster 1877 och skapade en hel del uppståndelse. Collie Club of America har utmärkelsen att vara en av de äldsta rasklubbarna i USA, sedan den grundades 1886. Amerikas rika klass började samla och visa Collies, som var på modet under en tid. Som nämnts på Collie Health Foundation-webbplatsen presenterade författaren och uppfödaren Albert Payson Terhunes berättelser och böcker ofta Collies Rough och väckte ytterligare uppmärksamhet till rasen, och ett par vita Collies hölls till och med av president Coolidge och hans fru.
1924 skapade en Collie vid namn "Bobbie" rubriker genom att dök upp till sin familjs hem i Oregon sex månader efter att han hade blivit separerad från dem på deras semester i Indiana. Människor som såg hans berättelse i tidningarna och hade interagerat med Bobbie längs vägen skickade mail till hans familj och beskrev delar av hans resa. En undersökning fastställde att han måste ha rest nästan 3000 miles till fots och korsat Klippiga bergen mitt på vintern för att återvända till sina människor. Bobbie, en riktig familjehund , blev en lokal legend och nationalhjälte, med sina bedrifter som till och med gav honom ett bidrag i Ripley's Believe It Or Not .
Bobbies verkliga historia, efterföljande bok och stumfilm kan ha inspirerat Eric Knights ikoniska verk Lassie Come Home, som sedan gjordes till en film. Naturligtvis räckte inte en Lassie-film för att tillfredsställa en fängslad publik. Tränaren Rudd Weatherwax och hans Collie Pal fortsatte med att grunda en franchise med flera filmer och en långvarig tv-serie som formade en nations fantasi.
Resultatet var en Lassie-dille som slungade Collies till internationell berömmelse. Från obskyr gårdshund till exalterad drottningskamrat till fantastisk filmstjärna till allestädes närvarande husdjur, Collien hade nått en zenit av popularitet. Men som så ofta är sant, var ryktet inte allt för det bästa. Medan efterfrågan på Rough Collie-hundar ökade i höjden, översvämmade opportunistiska uppfödare marknaden med urskillningslöst uppfödda valpar. Hälsoproblemen ökade på grund av dessa dåliga avelsmetoder.
Collies upplevde äntligen en nedgång i popularitet efter 1970-talet. Detta var inte en dålig sak, eftersom det gav rasentusiaster en chans att rätta till några av de problem som skapades av Collie-boomen. Och Lassies arv lever vidare, som frasen "Vilken sorts hund är Lassie ” googlas över 4 000 gånger per månad. Till denna dag kallas en Rough Collie ofta helt enkelt som en "Lassie-hund ".
Så hur populära är Rough Collies och Smooth Collies? Rough Collies fortsatte att njuta av uppmärksamhet och hölls som husdjur av sådana kändisar som Elvis Presley och Kevin Costner. För närvarande är Texas A &M Universitys maskot en Rough Collie som heter Reveille. Även om Smooth Collies aldrig har varit i rampljuset som deras långhåriga Collie-motsvarigheter, har de nyligen upplevt något av en servicehundrenässans eftersom människor har lagt märke till deras förmåga och praktiska egenskaper, med tanke på deras lägre skötselkrav. Freedom Guide Dogs i New York använder Smooth-coated Collies som ledarhundar för blinda.
För närvarande rankas Collie-rasen på plats 38 i popularitet av de 193 raser som erkänns av AKC. Som Pati Merrill, tidigare ordförande för Collie Health Foundation, sa:"Vi är okej med det." Dedikerade uppfödares arbete under de senaste decennierna har till stor del handlat om skadekontroll, och det lönar sig.
Dagens Collies anses vara en relativt frisk ras, med en genomsnittlig livslängd på 12 till 14 år. Men som med alla djur som har avlats selektivt och studerats med stor omsorg under många gyllene år, har vissa hälsotillstånd identifierats, inklusive känslighet för vissa läkemedel. Innan du adopterar en Collie eller köper en Collie-valp är det bäst att ta reda på vad du kan om hälsohistoria.
Särskilt majoriteten av Collies idag (uppskattningar från olika källor sträcker sig från 60% – 75% över hela världen) påverkas i viss utsträckning av CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly). Som namnet antyder är Collie Eye Anomaly eller "Collie Eye defekt" ett tillstånd som kan påverka en hunds syn. Även om CEA förekommer med hög frekvens hos Collies, kan det också hittas hos Shetland Sheepdogs, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Lancashire Heelers och Novia Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers.
CEA, när det först identifierades för över 50 år sedan, påverkade uppskattningsvis 90 % av Collies i USA, men antalet minskar nu på grund av noggrant urval och testning. När det är som mest allvarligt kan CEA leda till viss synförlust och till och med total blindhet, även om sådana fall nu är begränsade till mindre än 10 % av Collie-populationen. Den goda nyheten är att "de flesta Collies med CEA inte uppvisar synproblem", enligt Eye Care for Animals.
Som sagt av The Collie Eye, "Tillståndet hos lindrigt drabbade hundar förvärras inte med tiden." Majoriteten av Collies med CEA, i mänskliga termer, kan anses vara något närsynta eller i behov av läsglasögon. Som sagt av Collie Health Foundation, "Majoriteten av hundar som är lindrigt drabbade kommer i allmänhet att ha perfekt adekvat syn under hela livet."
Om du funderar på att adoptera en vuxen hund eller vill utvärdera föräldrarna till en kull som du kan köpa en valp från, hjälper det att veta att en hund över 2 års ålder utan tecken på problem troligen inte löper risk för synförlust från CEA. Som förklarat på The Collie Eye-webbplatsen uppstår komplikationer från CEA "vanligtvis under de första par åren av livet."
CEA kan identifieras genom genetisk sjukdom test som pekar ut om en hund är påverkad, är bärare eller är fri från ett tillstånd. Dessutom kommer ögontester utförda av en veterinär ögonläkare, där ögonen vidgas och inspekteras, avgöra i vilken utsträckning en hund är påverkad av CEA. Det finns flera identifierbara etiketter för CEA, men Collie Health Foundations officiella ståndpunkt är att endast bärare eller hundar med koroidal hypoplasi - "den minst skadliga och minst allvarliga formen" - ska födas upp.
Collies är dock benägna att få ett annat ärftligt ögontillstånd som kallas PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy). Vanligtvis mycket mindre vanligt men allvarligare än CEA, det är ett degenerativt tillstånd som leder till blindhet. Även om CEA har varit föremål för mycket hype och hysteri, bör ansvariga uppfödare också testa för PRA.
Inga hundar med PRA ska användas för avel. De flesta hundar med PRA kommer att vara blinda när de är 1 år gamla, men det finns en sen debuterande form som inte visar sig förrän en hund är någonstans från 3-9 år gammal. Det är därför det är viktigt för uppfödare att genetiskt testa för PRA. Enligt Animal Eye Care, "PRA förekommer i de flesta raser av hundar och förekommer även i blandraser."
Medan Collies inte är särskilt utsatta för armbågs- och höftdysplasi , det är en extra bonus om du kan hitta en uppfödare som har gjort OFA gemensamma tester på sina hundar. Detta är dock inte ett väldigt enkelt test, eftersom det går ut på att bedöva en hund för att få tydliga röntgenbilder medan den ligger på rygg. Alla uppfödare är inte villiga att utsätta sina hundar för detta, särskilt om de kommer från en blodlinje som inte plågas av ledproblem eller om deras hundar har MDR1.
MDR1 (Multi Drug Resistance Syndrome) är en läkemedelskänslighet som gör Collies (och 12 andra populära raser, plus blandningar av dessa raser) känsliga för vissa kemiska föreningar som anestetika och vissa parasitförebyggande medel. MDR1 kan identifieras genom genetisk testning (DNA-test), vilket innebär att ett saliv- eller blodprov skickas till ett labb för analys. Paw Print Genetics tester för "The Big 3" Collie hälsoproblem, samt erbjuder en "Collie Panel" för att testa för 3 andra, mindre vanliga – men fortfarande oroande – hälsoproblem.
Du kanske undrar, borde inte uppfödare bara välja idealiska hundar för avel? I en perfekt värld, ja. Men även ett till synes felfritt hundexemplar kan ha dolda problem. Om alla uppfödare endast valde genetiska paragoner för att reproducera, skulle genpoolen reduceras till bara 25 % eller mindre av alla Collies och skulle bli så begränsad att det skapade andra problem. Vanligtvis är det bästa scenariot att välja hundar som har minimala fel och på så sätt gradvis föder ut oönskade egenskaper.
Så varför skaffa en Collie, eller någon renrasig hund, om de har hälsoproblem? En renrasig fördel är att deras genetiska anlag har identifierats och du vet i förväg vad du ska kolla efter. Collies och deras släktingar är benägna att få ögonproblem, Bully föder upp till hudproblem, boxare och andra brachycephalic hundar till andningsproblem, Beagle till epilepsi, St. Bernards och liknande stora, tunga raser till ledproblem.
Hybridkraft är till stor del en myt, vilket upptäcktes av en djupgående studie under en femårsperiod som undersökte de veterinära hälsojournalerna för 90 000 renrasiga och blandrashundar. Anita Oberbauer, en djurfysiolog och ordförande för djurvetenskapsavdelningen vid UC Davis, sa:"Allmänheten är under intrycket att blandraser uppvisar kraft och inte kommer att uttrycka genetiska störningar. Detta är helt enkelt inte sant.”
Även om en breddning av en genpool kan ha vissa fördelar, kvarstår faktum att korsning av hundar av olika raser tillsammans inte på magiskt sätt kommer att utplåna ärftliga hälsofel. Om en Collie med ögonproblem föds upp till en standardpudel med höftproblem, kommer "Cadoodle"-valparna som är resultatet av en sådan korsning att vara genetiskt predisponerade för både höft och ögonproblem. Uppfödare av designerhundar citerar alltför ofta "hybrid vigor"-tropen som en ursäkt för att inte få några tester gjorda – samtidigt som de tar ut renrasiga priser – och göra en orimlig vinst.
Ibland gör muttar de bästa hundarna, men deras genetik är ett wild card. Om du adopterar en korsning eller mutt är det fortfarande en bra idé att se till att föräldrarna har screenats eller till och med att låta den aktiva hunden testas individuellt för att veta vilka potentiella hälsotillstånd som kan dyka upp.
Collies är en mångsidig ras, förmodligen på grund av deras varierande bakgrund.
De två Collies (grov sort) jag växte upp med på vår hobbygård i Michigan hade flera jobb. De var draghundar:kopplade till en vagn på sommaren eller kälke på vintern för att dra runt mina småsystrar eller kusiner på gården. They were entertainers:Leia would jump through hula hoops and tire swings, and Luke would army crawl and dance on his hind legs. They were herders:sent to round up our goats, chickens, and even the pet rabbit after they had been let out to free range. They were varmint dogs:killing or driving off mice, gophers, woodchucks, opossums, raccoons, or stray cats that infested or trespassed on our property. They were watchdogs:reliably announcing the arrival of visitors. They were protectors:staunchly placing themselves between us children and potential danger.
You may be thinking, well, those are examples of just two multi-tasking dogs. But these are by no means rare instances . In my local Collie Club, we have Collies involved in herding, agility, barn hunt, conformation shows, obedience trials, and volunteer therapy dogs that work in the community.
Some Collies are still used as general-purpose farm dogs, particularly by those who value their gentler, less mouthy approach to guiding livestock. But most Collies’ main function in modern times is as a companion, something at which they have proven to excel. They have also successfully been used as assistance dogs. Smooth Collies, due to their shorter fur and easier upkeep, are generally preferred over the Lassie dog breed as guide dogs for the blind, but Rough Collies can be used as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Mobility Assistance dogs, and Seizure Alert Dogs, to name a few.
As a result of Collies’ worldwide popularity, their appearance and size now varies slightly from country to country based on differences in breed standards. For example, the standards of the United Kennel Club (an international breed registry) and the American Kennel Club (the registry of the USA) specify that female Collies should weigh 50-65 pounds and stand 22-24 inches tall at the shoulders, while males should weigh 60-75 pounds and stand 24-26 inches at the shoulders. The UK (United Kingdom) and FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) standards, by contrast, call for a smaller dog ranging in wither height from 51-56 centimeters for females and 56-61 centimeters for males, with the weight unspecified.
I am part of some international Facebook Collie groups, and I follow thousands of Collie Instagram accounts from nearly every nation under the sun. Because of this, I’ve learned to pick up on a Collie’s probable region of origin based on its “look.”
In general, American Collies are larger, having longer muzzles with less of a stop (dished face), and very often erect ears that do not stay tipped (naturally folded over at the top) without the aid of glue or tape applied when they are puppies. European Collies tend to be smaller, with many of them having luxurious coats. South American Collies seem to have larger eyes, harking back to the old “Lassie” type. Australian Collies have a certain look, as do German Collies… I could go on.
The point is, no matter how much people may bicker over variations in head structure, ear carriage, and coat color due to region or bloodline – they’re all Collies, and as such they’re all wonderful.
Collies come in 2 coat types, Long-Haired Collie (Rough) and Short-Haired Collie (Smooth), and 4 main coat colors (Sable &White, Tri color, Blue Merle, and White). Outcrossing to Borzois may have introduced the “white” coat pattern, which is still recognized in the US but no longer in the UK.
Two merles should never, never be bred together, as such a breeding can produce “double merle” dogs that are blind, deaf, or both. (This goes for merle dogs of any breed, not just Collies.) Some double merle puppies are born with no eyes at all. Unscrupulous breeders deliberately breed blue merles together to obtain an entire litter of merle puppies, which can be sold for more money since they are a less common color. Sadly, up to a quarter of such a litter can be double merles, which may be disposed of or sold to unsuspecting buyers as “rare” white merles.
Other people produce such disabled “double dilute” puppies through ignorance, mistakenly breeding what they thought was a pure sable Collie – but was actually a sable merle – to a blue merle. Sometimes sable merles have blue eyes or partial blue eyes; but if they do not it is hard to distinguish them as adults from regular sable and white Collies, as any light spotting/marbling they may have had as puppies usually fades. Often the only way to identify an adult sable merle is to check the ear tips for retained silvery hairs.
A Rough Collie requires maintenance, though not to the extent you might think. People who see my Collies and me out in public often say things like, “Oh, I bet grooming a Rough Collie must be terrible !” Honestly, it’s not, though I’m sure that’s a matter of perspective. On average, I spend 15-30 minutes once a week per Collie. (Yoshi, my fox-like female, is the 15, while Gustav, my lion-like male, is the 30.) The secret is in the upkeep. Make the grooming a regular thing, and it’s surprisingly manageable. Personally, I enjoy the grooming sessions and see them as a bonding experience with my dogs.
Most female Rough Collies are easier to brush out than males. They don’t generally get such a luxuriant mane. However, they do have a full coat shed after giving birth or after each heat, which occurs every 6-9 months in unspayed females.
If you love the Collie personality but don’t want the coat hassle, consider a Smooth Collie. They aren’t as glamorous as their long coat relatives and so don’t get as much attention, but they are just as fabulous in every other way and far more low-maintenance.
Collies are described as “seasonal” shedders. As spring gets into full swing, you can expect a big pre-summer blowout of the suddenly superfluous undercoat. It will come out in clumps, like a horse casting off its shaggy winter coat. This natural thinning of the undercoat is how a Collie prepares itself for the summer heat.
I’ll say that again – please do not ever shave your Collie. If you outsource the coat maintenance, don’t let your groomer do it either – no matter how professional they think they are. (Shaving any double-coated breed also leaves them prone to skin infections and reduced/altered coat quality.) It does them no favors and actually removes the natural insulation that helps them stay cool in hot weather. A Collie’s hairs are hollow, allowing heat to travel out the pores and be released through the hair shaft. Dogs do not sweat through their skin like we do, except on the paw pads. Panting is their natural cooling system. I don’t shave my Collies, and we live in Florida. They survive just fine.
Collies are also referred to as “dry clean” dogs, as brushing removes dirt and debris from their coat. Some will even lick themselves clean like cats. They do not typically carry an oily coat or offensive doggie odor. However, a good bath is recommended every few months (some say only once annually), preferably with a mild or medicated shampoo to avoid skin irritation. Depending how thick your Collie’s outer coat is, you may need to wet and wash them in sections. It can also help to pre-mix a solution of shampoo and water in a pump bottle or empty dish soap container to squirt it onto the skin. Be sure to rinse and dry as well as possible to prevent hot spots from cropping up.
Do Collies shed? Yes, but when not in the throes of a seasonal blowout, Rough Collie shedding is comparatively minimal to other double-coated breeds. You won’t normally see the long, single hairs constantly decorating furniture and floors of houses belonging to German Shepherds or even Labrador Retrievers. Instead, soft Collie under-fur clumps into tidy little tumbleweeds, easily located and swept or vacuumed up. It’s also fairly simple to get off of clothing, since it can be rolled into fun little furballs between your fingertips or removed with a lint glove or roller.
Some side notes on cleaning up after the Lassie dog breed … Investing in a brush for de-furring furniture and certain types of rugs saves tons of time and effort. Also, a long-handled FURemover or “carpet rake” is better than a regular broom for sweeping up hair. (Trust me; I want to compose an ode to mine.) I discovered the amazing properties of fur rakes while working at a veterinary clinic. They’ve made common brooms almost obsolete for me, since they can be used on bare floors also.
If you have carpet, you’ll need to frequently clean Collie fur out of your vacuum to keep it functioning efficiently.

View on Amazon Collies, Rough or Smooth variety, are considered to be average energy dogs. Most of the time, they are content to perform bear rug impersonations. Usually they are good with one walk a day, or a rousing game of tug-of-war or fetch. I went through a rough patch for a while, and I was living in a trailer with no yard for Gus to run in. At that time, we had two walks every day like clockwork, with off-leash time on the weekends. If you have an apartment and no fenced yard, keeping a Collie can be done; but it will take some commitment on your part.
Also, take the weather into account when exercising your Collie. Dogs can and will overheat faster than humans, and are thus more susceptible to heat stroke. Because we live in Florida, I never walk my dogs midday during the hot months (which is most months) and when we do walk, we avoid pavement – especially asphalt or blacktop – if at all possible. Some people also opt to have their dogs wear footwear, for the same purpose that humans wear shoes. (While this may seem ridiculous, what’s really ridiculous is dogs ending up at veterinary emergency rooms because their paw pads were horribly burned.) Dog shoes can also be helpful in cold climates. When we lived in Michigan, I fished many an ice ball out from between my Collies’ paw pads. You can save yourself and your dog the hassle by investing in some canine snow boots.
Sometimes I just play inside with Yoshi on rainy days or when I’m not up to a walk. A dog park is another alternative for those days when you’re feeling less active, since you can let your Collie off-leash to get their energy out with other dog friends. If you have a more high-energy Collie dog, you may want to consider nosework training or involvement in agility or herding competitions.
For puppies, the energy requirements will obviously be higher. When Yoshi was younger, she got two walks per day – usually one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. That way, she would be less inclined to boredom and destruction when we were away, and she would let us sleep through the night. A tired dog is a good dog.
When it comes to training and personality, Collies are relatively easy. Yoshi, my newest Collie, has been the most challenging by far, but I would still take Yoshi on her most rotten day over nearly any other dog on their best day. Generally, even a “naughty” Collie is still a good dog.
Collies are highly intelligent dogs, often learning new commands within the first few repetitions. They are eager to please, if they like you and have a bond with you. Plenty of Collies win obedience titles. However, they are not “biddable” for just anyone. If someone else tries to order Sir Gustav around, he looks at me as if to ask, “Do I really have to listen to them?” They have a mind of their own, you see, and aren’t too keen on robotic obedience. Otherwise, they’d be featured on “Top Ten Smartest Dogs” lists more often.
This “intelligent disobedience” isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are times it can save a human’s life. For instance, a guide dog for the blind should not obey a command to cross the street if it sees a car coming. A dog’s ability to think for himself can actually make a better worker, since the best herding dogs do not need to be micromanaged. Being able to say, “Go get the sheep” is simpler than having to show a dog through every step of the process necessary to bring in the sheep. While a dog will need guidance when introduced to a new task, the ability to work independently at some point is important.
If you give a Collie a command, it may not be obeyed promptly. Sometimes they like to evaluate how they’re feeling and what reward you’re offering, then decide if they will do what you ask. You may have to repeat yourself two or three times, with increasing firmness, until they finally sigh heavily as if to say, “Oh, fine – if you insist.”
Basically, Collies can be stubborn, in a polite, Bartleby sort of way. Many times I have asked one of my Collies (and I’m now on my 4th and 5th) to do something, only to have them stare coolly at me with an expression that says, “I prefer not to.” If a Collie doesn’t see the point of doing a thing and isn’t sufficiently motivated, they will be disinclined to do it. In this respect, they can be on the same wavelength with cats.
Like people, not all Collies are created equal. My boy Gustav loves to wow an audience with his trick repertoire:the more people to impress, the more of a ham he becomes. He is motivated by lavish praise. My girl Yoshi couldn’t care less if a crowd of people is watching, because public opinion matters not at all to her. She is motivated by the promise of play.
Collies are sensitive, to the extent that some owners swear their Collies are psychic. They are emotionally intelligent:picking up on moods, registering tones, and reading facial expressions to an uncanny degree. To my shame, I have a perfect example of this…
My Collies like to lie directly in front of doors or in pathways, ideally positioned to receive attention as their humans come and go. Due to this adorable but inconvenient habit, my dogs know the word “MOVE.” Which I sometimes have to repeat (see above). Except when I’m grumpy. At such times, the Collies take one look at my face and clear the way without my having to say a word.
Due to this sensitivity, it is almost criminal to use heavy-handed training methods with Collies. They will respond to a word, a tone, a gesture, a directional cue, a look, a silence. If you treat them with respect and love, they will lavish the same on you, tenfold. They will learn quickly, in an effort to make the person they adore happy, and they will adeptly pick up on not only obedience training (come, sit, lie down, stay) but also manners training (quiet, wait, move, no, go.)
Manners training is crucial if you want your Collie to be a beloved member of your household. It’s no fun being that embarrassed pet parent who shoves their dog in a crate, the garage, or the back yard every time someone comes over. With a Collie, this shouldn’t be necessary. If you teach your Collie to greet new friends with paws on the ground, not to be a haunting presence at meals, and not to be a nuisance barker, you will have a much calmer home.
There seems to be this misconception now that only “positive reinforcement” can be used when training a dog. This likely stems from a total misunderstanding of the technical terms used in ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis), which is a field related to pyschology. As someone who has worked as an ABA Instructor, I know firsthand that ABA definitions are different from the language of everyday people. For instance, negative reinforcement does not mean abuse; it means the removal of something negative in order to increase a desired response – probably not at all what most people would have thought.
In ABA terms, punishment doesn’t mean abuse either:“positive punishment” refers to the addition of something and “negative punishment” refers to the removal of something – both with the goal of decreasing an undesirable behavior. In reality, both reinforcement (positive and negative) and punishment (positive and negative) can be used in tandem as part of a behavior modification plan.
Simply stated, some people act afraid to reprimand their dogs at all, but correction happens all the time from other dogs and even the environment. Rewards (treats, praise, play, etc.) should absolutely be the go-to, but reproof is sometimes necessary to keep bad or even dangerous habits, like car chasing, from forming. Just remember that correction without connection will not get you very far. A trusting bond is essential for progress.
At a conference for ABA Instructors, I met dog trainers as well as teachers, and I even attended a session taught by a successful zoologist and animal trainer. The way we learn is not so different from the way animals learn, in that our behaviors are shaped by our environments.
